Glutathione supports several cellular processes beyond direct antioxidant action. It serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase enzymes, which reduce peroxides and conjugate electrophiles, respectively. The molecule also acts as a reservoir of cysteine, an amino acid that can limit protein synthesis and redox signaling. In human nutrition, oral glutathione is sold as a supplement, but how much intact glutathione reaches tissues after ingestion remains an active research question. Clinical claims about supplementation are not uniformly supported by controlled trials.
Glutathione is a small tripeptide built from glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Its peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine involves the gamma-carboxyl group rather than the usual alpha-carboxyl group. This structure gives the molecule a reactive thiol on the cysteine residue. The reduced form, often abbreviated GSH, is the predominant intracellular species in many cell types. Because the thiol can donate electrons, glutathione participates in redox chemistry and in the conjugation of reactive molecules.
Stability depends on pH, temperature, oxygen exposure, and trace metals. Aqueous solutions of reduced glutathione are susceptible to oxidation, especially when neutral or alkaline and exposed to air. Transition metal ions can catalyze thiol oxidation, so chelators and inert atmospheres are sometimes used in research settings. Standards are typically stored cold and desiccated, with limited freeze-thaw cycles. Questions remain about how closely in vitro stability data reflect the behavior of glutathione within intact cells and tissues.
Measuring glutathione requires attention to oxidation during sample handling, because GSH in biological samples can convert to GSSG or form mixed disulfides with proteins after collection. Acidic extraction, rapid cooling, and chelating agents are commonly used to limit such changes. Analytical methods usually distinguish free reduced glutathione, total glutathione, and protein-bound forms. Because these forms have different stability and reactivity, reported values depend heavily on the preparation protocol. No single preparation is universally suitable for every biological matrix or analytical goal.

Biosynthesis proceeds in two ATP-dependent steps. First, glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine. Second, glutathione synthetase adds glycine to the intermediate. The pathway is regulated by cysteine availability, enzyme expression, and feedback inhibition by glutathione itself. Liver tissue has a particularly high capacity for synthesis and export. Because the molecule is made inside cells, circulating glutathione reflects a balance of release, uptake, and breakdown rather than simple dietary supply.
Functionally, glutathione supports redox balance by donating electrons and becoming oxidized. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes participate in peroxide reduction and in conjugation reactions that help process reactive molecules. Separate from antioxidant roles, glutathione can modify protein cysteines through S-glutathionylation, influencing enzyme activity and signaling. Research continues to examine how these chemical roles translate into whole-organism effects.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its glutamate-cysteine linkage uses the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate, a feature that resists standard peptidases. The cysteine residue provides a thiol group, which gives the molecule its reducing character. In cells, glutathione is often the most abundant small-molecule thiol, with concentrations varying widely by tissue and compartment. It exists mainly in a reduced form called GSH, while oxidation produces a disulfide-linked dimer called GSSG.
Quantification of glutathione in biological or food samples commonly uses liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet, fluorescence, electrochemical, or mass spectrometric detection. Because the thiol group oxidizes readily, samples are often acidified or derivatized immediately after collection to stabilize reduced glutathione. Enzymatic recycling assays and colorimetric kits offer higher throughput but generally lower specificity than chromatographic methods. Mass spectrometry can distinguish glutathione from related thiols and allow simultaneous measurement of oxidized forms. Reported concentrations depend strongly on sample type, extraction procedure, and analytical platform.
Glutathione reference materials are sensitive to oxygen, light, and elevated temperature. Solid material is typically stored desiccated at -20 °C or below, while solutions require tighter control because thiol oxidation proceeds faster in liquid form. Aqueous solutions are often prepared fresh, kept cold, and protected from air; some protocols add acid or chelating agents to slow metal-catalyzed oxidation. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can accelerate degradation and should be avoided. Stability data vary by matrix, so laboratories usually verify performance with their own storage conditions.
Glutathione synthesis proceeds in two ATP-dependent steps catalyzed by glutamate-cysteine ligase and glutathione synthetase. The first step joins glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine and is generally rate-limiting. The second step adds glycine to complete the tripeptide. Cysteine availability, feedback inhibition by glutathione, and oxidative conditions influence flux through this pathway. The pathway is conserved across many organisms, and degradation by gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and related peptidases recycles amino acids for new synthesis.
Within cells, glutathione serves as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes reduce hydrogen peroxide and organic peroxides or conjugate electrophilic compounds to the thiol group. The resulting conjugates can be exported and processed through mercapturic acid pathways. Glutathione also contributes to protein thiol homeostasis and to recycling of other antioxidants such as ascorbate. Its precise roles vary by tissue, and many regulatory effects observed in laboratory systems remain difficult to quantify in whole organisms.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It occurs in nearly all living cells, with highest concentrations in liver, kidney, and red blood cells, and exists in reduced (GSH) and oxidized disulfide (GSSG) forms. The cysteine thiol group enables reversible oxidation and reduction reactions. This property makes glutathione a central participant in cellular redox balance. The balance between these forms is often used as an indicator of oxidative stress.
Quality control for glutathione focuses on identity, purity, and oxidation state. Certificates of analysis may report assay value, water content, and the presence of GSSG or other impurities. Chromatographic purity is often expressed as a percentage of peak area. Reference standards help laboratories compare results across instruments and batches. Because glutathione is a small, polar molecule, separation from cysteine, gamma-glutamylcysteine, and related thiols can be challenging. Verification often combines more than one analytical technique.
Measuring glutathione requires attention to sample preparation because the molecule oxidizes readily. Blood, tissue, and cell samples are often treated with acid to precipitate proteins and stabilize the thiol. Without such steps, GSH can convert to GSSG or form mixed disulfides during storage. Analytical methods include spectrophotometric assays, high-performance liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Each approach has different sensitivity, specificity, and susceptibility to interference from related compounds in complex matrices.
For solid glutathione, storage conditions affect shelf life. The reduced form is typically kept cool, dry, and protected from air and light. Moisture can promote oxidation, while elevated temperatures accelerate degradation. Suppliers often specify storage at or below freezing, sometimes under inert gas. Solutions are less stable than powders and may require preparation shortly before use. Buffers and chelating agents can slow oxidation, but they do not eliminate it. Published stability data vary with matrix, pH, and container.
Once a layer is filled he moves the design downwards, which both helps to propel the storyline (a descent into a mysterious shaft) and also makes the best use of space. Visually the maps are of a high quality, with HDR lighting implemented in the latest release, and the environments match those of the official game in look and feel. The player's Combine opposition are positioned logically, a feat given the vast number of communicating areas in each map. New adversaries do not spawn as soon as the player completes an objective but appear realistically as the episode progresses. The first Minerva map was inspired by the fully modelled island design of the Halo: Combat Evolved level "The Silent Cartographer". Foster describes Minerva as an "anti-modification": "The aim isn't to replace as much game content as possible; instead, it's to tell my own apocryphal story set in the Half-Life 2 universe, and to actually release something for the public to play." The mod's companion website is available in French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Russian. Localization packs developed by the LocWorks game localization team were released in November 2008. Foster was recruited by Valve to work on the Half Life 2: Episode Three development team, and began working for them in October 2008. Foster initially stated his intention to continue working on "Out Of Time" in his spare time. However, in a later interview with Eurogamer, Foster stated that the series would probably not continue. Foster continues to be employed at Valve and was involved with map designs of Portal 2.
Cordycepin, or 3'-deoxyadenosine, is a derivative of the nucleoside adenosine, differing from the latter by the replacement of the hydroxy group in the 3' position with a hydrogen. It was initially extracted from the fungus Cordyceps militaris, but can now be produced synthetically.
=== Asia === In Western Asia, during the region's November–April rainy season, there is increased precipitation in the El Niño phase and reduced precipitation in the La Niña phase on average. During El Niño years: As warm water spreads from the west Pacific and the Indian Ocean to the east Pacific, it takes the rain with it, causing extensive drought in the western Pacific and rainfall in the normally dry eastern Pacific. Singapore experienced the driest February in 2010 since records began in 1869, with only 6.3 mm of rain falling in the month. The years 1968 and 2005 had the next driest Februaries, when 8.4 mm of rain fell. During La Niña years, the formation of tropical cyclones, along with the subtropical ridge position, shifts westward across the western Pacific Ocean, which increases the landfall threat in China. In March 2008, La Niña caused a drop in sea surface temperatures over Southeast Asia by 2 °C (3.6 °F). It also caused heavy rains over the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Altria, like other tobacco companies, has invested in science and medical companies which develop and produce medical products for conditions caused or aggravated by smoking. == Supply chain == As of 2021, almost 90% of raw lithium extraction originated from three countries: Australia (53%), Chile (24%), and China (10%), with almost all production coming from China (56%), Chile (32%) and Argentina (11%).
Polish refugees were housed at dedicated settlements set up at Marandellas and Rusape, two towns about 40 km (25 mi) apart to the south-east of Salisbury, from 1943. There were similar camps in Kenya, Nyasaland, Tanganyika, Northern Rhodesia and South Africa. The Polish settlements in Southern Rhodesia were run jointly by local authorities and the Polish consulate in Salisbury; the Polish government-in-exile in London provided funding. Transport back to Europe picked up sharply as the war came to a close, and by October 1945 less than 2,000 Polish refugees remained. Colonial officials were reluctant to let the Poles stay indefinitely, asserting that they were not culturally British enough and might have communist connections or sympathies, but most of those who remained showed little inclination to leave. Southern Rhodesia ultimately allowed around 726 Polish refugees to settle permanently after the war.
=== Fatigue === Fatigue is a common symptom of fibromyalgia. Patients may experience physical or mental fatigue. Physical fatigue can present as a feeling of exhaustion after exercise or limitation in daily activities. Fibromyalgia fatigue can range from feeling mildly tired to flu-like exhaustion. Severe fatigue may come on suddenly, making it difficult to be active at all. The impact of fatigue can be severe and pose more of a problem than the pain. Fatigue is a complicated, multifactorial, and vexing symptom that is highly prevalent (76%) and stubbornly persistent, as evidenced by longitudinal studies over 5 years. Fatigue does not improve with sleep or rest. Medication seems to have little impact on FM fatigue.
In continuum mechanics, viscosity is a property of a fluid that quantifies the resistance force acting on fluids when there is relative motion between fluid parcels. This resistance force is caused by the stress in fluid parcels, which ideally is directly proportional to the strain rate (the time derivative of strain) that arises when fluid parcels are in relative motion, and the relative speed between the boundary between adjacent fluid parcels is zero. In liquids, viscosity arises from cohesive molecular forces, while in gases it results from molecular collisions. Except for the case of superfluidity, there is no fluid with zero viscosity, and thus all fluid flows involve viscous effects to some degree. For liquids, it corresponds to the informal concept of thickness; for example, syrup has a higher viscosity than water. Viscosity is defined scientifically as a force multiplied by a time divided by an area. Thus its SI units are newton-seconds per metre squared, or pascal-seconds. For instance, when a viscous fluid is forced through a tube, it flows more quickly near the tube's center line than near its walls. Some stress (such as a pressure difference between the two ends of the tube) is needed to sustain the flow. This is because a force is required to overcome the friction between the layers of the fluid which are in relative motion. For a tube with a constant rate of flow, the strength of the compensating force is proportional to the fluid's viscosity. In general, viscosity depends on a fluid's state, such as its temperature, pressure, and rate of deformation.

==== Train ==== Amtrak, the national passenger rail system, provides service to Albany from its Albany Station at 10th Avenue SW on two routes. Long-haul train route the Coast Starlight (with service from Los Angeles to Seattle) stops in Albany daily in both directions. Amtrak Cascades commuter trains operate between Vancouver, British Columbia and Eugene, Oregon, and serve Albany several times daily in each direction. The Amtrak Cascades line is the proposed path of the Pacific Northwest Corridor high-speed rail line. The Albany station would be one of many stops along the proposed 466-mile (750 km), 110-mile-per-hour (180 km/h) passenger line. The station itself was constructed in 1909 for the Southern Pacific Railroad and is built of masonry. It is one of the oldest continuously operating passenger rail stations in the U.S. and has one of the best-equipped engine shops in the northwest. Southern Pacific 4449, a steam locomotive which resides at the Oregon Rail Heritage Center in Portland, occasionally visited the shop for repairs when it was residing at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in Portland (before 2012), as did several other locomotives stored at the now-demolished roundhouse. Beginning in 2004, the station and the surrounding area underwent an $11.3 million restoration that was funded with a combination of federal, state, local, and Amtrak money. In 2006 the city received the Award in Downtown Excellence from the Oregon Downtown Development Association for the renovation of the station.
== Epidemiology == Diabetes is rare in cats younger than five years old. Typically, affected cats are obese. Burmese cats in Europe and Australia have increased risk of developing diabetes; American Burmese cats do not have this increased risk due to genetic differences between American Burmese and Burmese in other parts of the world.

It is a tripeptide of glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. The linkage between glutamate and cysteine uses the gamma-carboxyl group, which is unusual for peptides.
GSH is the reduced form with a free thiol group. GSSG is the oxidized dimer formed when two GSH molecules join by a disulfide bond.
It is synthesized inside cells and is not classified as an essential dietary nutrient for most people. Dietary and supplemental sources are studied, but direct requirements are not established in the same way as for vitamins.
Common methods include enzymatic recycling assays, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. Many protocols separate reduced glutathione from its oxidized disulfide form before detection.
